Roundabouts

Roundabouts are a form of intersection control in common use throughout the world. The “modern” roundabout has come into favour recently as an effective means of controlling traffic at intersections. A modern roundabout is an un-signalized circular intersection engineered to maximize safety and minimize traffic delay. All traffic circulates counter-clockwise within the roundabout always to the right of the central island.

The County of Essex is pleased with the first two roundabouts on the County Road Network. Both roundabouts have been operating since October 2010 and have been well received by the public:

  1. County Road 31 / 3rd Concession; and
  2. County Road 23 / County Road 8.

 Characteristics of a Roundabout

  • Low speed on approach
  • Approaching vehicles yield to traffic within roundabout
  • Vehicle drives counter-clockwise within roundabout
  • Low speed on exit
  • Continuous movement of traffic
